It can and does become one unit, but when it comes to feeding time the top smaller box has to be removed to get access to the bottom part that holds the dog food. My thought at the time of purchase was lifting the bottom box s lid to gain access to the bottom box while the top box was still attached to the bottom box... I still have to store the biscuits on top of the fridge, but they last longer in the air tight smaller box... I put the dry food and biscuits in their own gallon sized bags and it held up quite well. If I had to do it over again, I probably would not buy this particular storage system."

KEEPS PET FOOD FRESH: I purchase both pet foods monthly and it keeps the food as fresh as the day I opened the bags... If you have just one type of pet, the bottom can be used for the dry food and the top can be used for treats that tend to go stale more quickly. SPACE SAVER: It rolls smoothly and because it's on the narrow side, it fits in a space smaller than I thought it would... Even when I dropped the top container filled with food, it's never opened, the plastic has never cracked... :) If I ever need another, I'm definitely going with IRIS brand."
