"For that reason you really do not have much option other than using these, unless you want to somehow create your own basket to put your filtration media into.""I am not bothered one bit by him washing his paws in his fountain, because the filter do a very good job of keeping the water clean, so I know he is always getting good, filtered, cycled water."
"Since I had anywhere between 2-4 cats simultaneously over those years and the filters were original, the fountain water stayed clean and would actually last up to 7-8 weeks (2 months)."
") I was about to throw away my filter and purchase a new one but then decided I didn't want to throw my 60 dollars down the drain (It's only 30 something dollars now, haha!"
"I have been changing out the filter every time I clean because it's also covered in that slime which I do not want to introduce back into the clean bowl, and because it's porous I cannot clean it off with soap."
"I feel like this fountain is great at circulating the water and by doing that it seems to keep it cooler, however it does a poor job at filtering debris from the water, which is why I am not so anxious to follow the "replace" every month instructions."
"It's only been about 3 weeks since I've had this product, but so far, I'm totally happy and would recommend this pet fountain!"

"As the 3 amigos stared at me like I was a complete idiot I proceeded to replace the old filter with a new one from my stock I had purchased on Amazon... I also have another cat that likes to use his paws to bring the water from the waterfall to his mouth... For that reason you really do not have much option other than using these, unless you want to somehow create your own basket to put your filtration media into.""For whatever reason, ever since he was little, he has always liked washing his paws in the toilet after it had been flushed, but not anymore... I am not bothered one bit by him washing his paws in his fountain, because the filter do a very good job of keeping the water clean, so I know he is always getting good, filtered, cycled water... The filters come in a 3pk, which costs about $8, & to keep it running in good shape & to make sure it lasts a long time, I do as recommended & completely wash it out once a month, & replace the filter."
"* I have had my Drinkwell Platinum fountain for over 24 years and in all those years, I have used a multitude of filters which I all thought came from the PetSafe vendor. Since I had anywhere between 2-4 cats simultaneously over those years and the filters were original, the fountain water stayed clean and would actually last up to 7-8 weeks (2 months)... Also, the water became slimy and when I went to clean out the Drinkwell weekly, there was slimy black mold on each filter."
"(I've had this happen while cleaning out an empty fish tank, and found later that this happens when some filters are run without water! ) I was about to throw away my filter and purchase a new one but then decided I didn't want to throw my 60 dollars down the drain (It's only 30 something dollars now, haha!... I am SO glad I bought it (I initially thought why not just buy some pipecleaners and try it that way, but after cleaning my pump, I'm glad I put in the small investment)."
"* I actually did out of curiosity taste the water that comes out of these things when i first installed the fountain (yes, i'm a crazy cat lady!... When I let it go for a month (with emptying/rinsing/refilling with fresh water every few days) the entire system is just covered with a thick, nasty slime that is a huge pain to clean off and that I really don't want my pets to be drinking... I have been changing out the filter every time I clean because it's also covered in that slime which I do not want to introduce back into the clean bowl, and because it's porous I cannot clean it off with soap."
"If you really look at the filter you will see that there is one side that is slightly longer than the other end... I feel like this fountain is great at circulating the water and by doing that it seems to keep it cooler, however it does a poor job at filtering debris from the water, which is why I am not so anxious to follow the "replace" every month instructions... I did by one of the cheaper models, just because I didn't want to spend a fortune and my cats have not interest."
"So far I've only had to clean them each once a week, there has been no slime like others have said... It's going to be nice not to worry about leaving bowls of water around the house when I go away for a few days!... It's only been about 3 weeks since I've had this product, but so far, I'm totally happy and would recommend this pet fountain!"

"Next thing I know I have 3 paws whacking me upside the head and I hear, "Hello Mcfly, you did not change the dang filter and now the water is running over the top of the filter... As the 3 amigos stared at me like I was a complete idiot I proceeded to replace the old filter with a new one from my stock I had purchased on Amazon. Once the new filter was in place, the 3 amigos all took their turns playing in the water, only pausing to give me the look of, "next time don't be such a dingbat," then proceeding to continue their frolicking... These filters will not take out anything that would be considered harmful like hard metals or even any minerals... Ok, he may just be playing with it, but he does take it over to the Drinkwell unit and puts the food in the water and then proceeds to bat it around. I also have another cat that likes to use his paws to bring the water from the waterfall to his mouth... For that reason you really do not have much option other than using these, unless you want to somehow create your own basket to put your filtration media into.""* After dealing with my spoiled little fur ball always wanting to play with the water in the toilet, & wanting to dip his paws & clean them in the toilet, I decided I would get him a fountain to try, & see if he would take a liking to this, rather than wanting to play with the cold, icky toilet water... For whatever reason, ever since he was little, he has always liked washing his paws in the toilet after it had been flushed, but not anymore... The first day or 2, took a little for him to get used too, but other than that, there's been no looking back... He now religiously uses his fountain to wash his paws all the time, & from what I have noticed he seems to drink at least twice as much water as he used too... I am not bothered one bit by him washing his paws in his fountain, because the filter do a very good job of keeping the water clean, so I know he is always getting good, filtered, cycled water... Being the only cat in the house(yes this is HIS castle, not mine anymore), he will need the reservoir refilled about once a week...
I do not remember if the pamphlet I took a picture of next to it came with the package or not as it might have been left over from my previous set of filters... Also, the water became slimy and when I went to clean out the Drinkwell weekly, there was slimy black mold on each filter... It is possible that the manufacturer cheapened out on these filters and changed their design but kept the old filter pictures online; however, I am not convinced... However, if this is all that is available and the other filters turn out to be the same, then I will try the manufacturer or pet store as a last resort. If I strike out there, I might just leave my fountain without a filter to see if it is better or worse than these filters make the water."
"* I was so disappointed when my Drinkwell fountain had a low pressure stream, even though I was removing the cat hair from the little vent in the bowl. I honestly thought maybe the fountain burned out from a time when it had been running all day with almost no water. (I've had this happen while cleaning out an empty fish tank, and found later that this happens when some filters are run without water! ) I was about to throw away my filter and purchase a new one but then decided I didn't want to throw my 60 dollars down the drain (It's only 30 something dollars now, haha!... I am SO glad I bought it (I initially thought why not just buy some pipecleaners and try it that way, but after cleaning my pump, I'm glad I put in the small investment). I don't usually write long reviews, but I wrote this one here because I hope to save other people the trouble of getting rid of their fountain because of a fixable issue like this! My only complaint about the cleaning kit is that the largest piece is meant to fit inside the water container, and while it does fit, it doesn't quite reach all the areas inside perfectly."
"* I actually did out of curiosity taste the water that comes out of these things when i first installed the fountain (yes, i'm a crazy cat lady!... ) Tastes comparable to how water from my Brita tastes right after I install a brand new filter. My only problem is that they need to be replaced more often than they state. Because the carbon filter is removing the chlorine from the water (which is what it's supposed to do), there's nothing to control the bacterial growth. When I let it go for a month (with emptying/rinsing/refilling with fresh water every few days) the entire system is just covered with a thick, nasty slime that is a huge pain to clean off and that I really don't want my pets to be drinking. I find that the best way to control this 'slime' issue is to thoroughly disassemble and clean the unit with dish soap every 2 to 3 weeks. I have been changing out the filter every time I clean because it's also covered in that slime which I do not want to introduce back into the clean bowl, and because it's porous I cannot clean it off with soap."
"* These filters are just like the original that came with my fountain... Some people have left comments about the filter not fitting right. If you really look at the filter you will see that there is one side that is slightly longer than the other end... Every time I wash my fountain (1-2x week-completely breaking it down and washing all parts) there is a lot of debris floating around. I feel like this fountain is great at circulating the water and by doing that it seems to keep it cooler, however it does a poor job at filtering debris from the water, which is why I am not so anxious to follow the "replace" every month instructions... There is never any debris on the filter when I take it out for cleaning... I did by one of the cheaper models, just because I didn't want to spend a fortune and my cats have not interest."
"I have 2 cats so I keep one in my bedroom, where my Cuddles mostly stays, and the other in the guest bedroom, where Snickers hangs out. I don't find the motor noisy at all, maybe because the floors are carpeted... So far I've only had to clean them each once a week, there has been no slime like others have said. I don't think I'll ever have the need to put them in the dishwasher! It's going to be nice not to worry about leaving bowls of water around the house when I go away for a few days!... And it's stopped Cuddles from pestering me when I'm at the bathroom sink... It's only been about 3 weeks since I've had this product, but so far, I'm totally happy and would recommend this pet fountain!"
